What is CardLister?
CardLister is a Mac app that helps you sell your Pokémon cards on eBay without typing up every listing by hand. Instead of photographing and describing cards one at a time, you lay a whole batch of cards out in a grid, take one photo of the fronts and one of the backs, and CardLister does the tedious work: it finds each card in the photo, helps you identify it and write a description, looks up a fair market price, and posts the finished listings to your eBay account once you approve them.
How it works, in three steps
- Import photos. Arrange your cards in a neat grid (for example 4 rows of 4) on a flat, plain surface. Take one photo of the fronts, flip the cards over in place, and take one photo of the backs. Load both photos into the app and tell it your grid size. The app cuts out each card automatically.
- Identify with Claude. The app prepares the card images and copies a ready-made set of instructions to your clipboard. You drag the images into claude.ai (a free website), paste the instructions, and then copy Claude's reply back into the app. The app fills in each card's name, description, condition, and estimated price.
- Review and post. Look over each listing, change anything you like, confirm the prices, and click Approve on the cards you want to sell. Then post them to eBay with one click.
Troubleshooting
Most problems can be fixed with the steps below. Start with the general fixes, then find the section that matches what you're seeing.
First, try the basics
- Quit and reopen the app. Choose CardLister > Quit CardLister from the menu bar (or press Command-Q), then open it again.
- Restart your Mac. Click the Apple logo in the top-left corner of your screen and choose Restart. This clears up a surprising number of issues.
- Check your internet connection. Price lookups and eBay posting both need the internet. Try opening a website in your browser to confirm you're online.
- Update the app. Open the App Store, click your name in the bottom-left, and install any available update for CardLister.
The app can't find my cards in the photo
- Lay the cards on a plain, uncluttered surface. A solid-color table or a large sheet of paper works well. Busy patterns confuse the detection.
- Keep the grid neat: straight rows, even spacing, and a little gap between cards so they don't touch or overlap.
- Take the photo from directly above, with the whole grid in frame. Avoid harsh shadows and glare; even indoor lighting is fine.
- Double-check the grid size you entered in the app. If you laid out 4 rows of 4 cards, the grid size should be 4 x 4. A wrong grid size is the most common cause of cards being cut out incorrectly.
- Make sure the backs photo has the cards in the same positions as the fronts photo. Flip the cards over in place rather than gathering them up and re-dealing.
The Claude step isn't working
- Make sure you dragged in all of the exported card images and pasted the entire prompt the app copied for you. If you're not sure the prompt is still on your clipboard, go back to the app and copy it again.
- When copying Claude's reply back, select and copy the whole reply, from the very first character to the very last. If the app says it can't read the reply, a piece was probably missed. Copy it again and re-paste.
- If Claude's reply looks incomplete or cut off, ask Claude to continue or regenerate the answer, then copy the full reply.
- claude.ai's free plan has usage limits. If Claude stops responding, wait a bit and try again, or split your batch into smaller groups.
Prices are missing or look wrong
- Open Settings > Pricing and click Test price lookup. If the test fails, check your internet connection and try again in a few minutes; the free pricing service is occasionally busy.
- Not every card is in the pricing database. When a card can't be matched, the app falls back to Claude's estimate, which is a rough guess. You can always type in your own price on the Review screen.
- You can switch between market pricing and manual pricing in Settings > Pricing at any time.
I can't post to eBay
- Posting requires a one-time setup in Settings > eBay. The Post buttons stay grayed out until every required field is filled in, so scan that screen for anything empty.
- If posting used to work and suddenly doesn't, your eBay authorization may have expired. Go to Settings > eBay, click Open eBay consent page, grant access again, and complete the exchange step.
- Make sure you're in the right environment. Sandbox is eBay's practice mode; nothing posted there appears on the real eBay. Switch to Production when you're ready to sell for real.
- If a single card fails to post, try posting it again; occasional hiccups on eBay's side usually resolve on a second attempt.
